Launch

Launch is the shortest stage in duration but the highest in stress, unless it's planned properly. This covers the period from your visa approval to your first stable weeks in Germany.

What Happens at This Stage

• Visa approval and travel booking. Once your visa is granted, timing your flight and your housing move-in date correctly avoids costly gaps or overlaps.
• Housing. A student dorm secured months in advance or a WG (shared flat) found closer to arrival both need to be locked in before other administrative steps can proceed.
• Anmeldung (local registration). This is required before you can open a bank account, get health insurance activated, or receive a residence permit. It's the true first domino.
• Bank account and health insurance. Both typically need your Anmeldung confirmation, so sequencing matters again here.
• SIM card, transport and first orientation. Small, practical steps that make the difference between feeling lost and feeling settled.

Why the First Two Weeks Set the Tone

Students who arrive with a checklist, and a rough order for that checklist, consistently report a smoother transition than those who try to solve everything on arrival. The goal of Launch isn't to eliminate every difficulty; it's to remove the ones that are entirely avoidable with preparation, so you can spend your energy on the ones that actually require adaptation.

Common Mistakes at the Launch Stage

• Booking housing and flights independently, without checking the Anmeldung appointment availability in that city first.
• Assuming the bank account and insurance can be sorted "whenever," when both are usually required before enrollment can be finalized.
• Underestimating how much administrative German is involved, even in an English-taught program.
